QUEST Q20 and Q40: the “SECRET” features…
After publishing the Quest Q20 and Q40 reviews, several readers have sent me some messages about undocumented “Secret” features (i.e. not described in the user’s manuals) that could be activated on those detectors in order to have really interesting results.
Before talking about them, let me thank all those friends who, with curiosity and passion, discovered this “secrets” that will extend the amazing performances of Quest detectors.
A special “Thank you!” goes to Mr. Jason Teng, Quest CEO and Chief Designer: with kindness and generosity, has given to me further details on those undocumented features.
Of course we will be ready to receive and publish your notes about any other Q20 and Q40 (and other models too!) “secret” features!

Feature:
RESET
Available on:
Q20 e Q40
Effect:
The metal detector will be restored to factory reset. Very useful in case of irregular behaviours due to user’s wrong settings or software accidental errors.
Activation Sequence:
While the detector is turned on, press the “M” and “Arrow DOWN” keys at the same time. The machine will be turned off. Press again “M”+“Arrow DOWN” and the detector will turn on again with factory settings.
Feature:
MANUAL GROUND BALANCE
Available on:
Q20 (Already documented on Q40 user’s manual)
Effect:
Beside the Semi-Automatic Ground Balance procedure, made by “pumping” the coil above the ground while keeping the “Ground Balance Key”, the Manual Ground Balance will allow you to set the machine in a more precise way or, at will, allow the user to introduce a little over or underbalance, very useful to counteract hot-rocks (overbalancing) or to enhance tiny targets detecting sensitivity (underbalancing).
Activation Sequence:
By pressing the “PINPOINTER” key and “Arrow UP” or “Arrow DOWN”, the manual ground balance value will be shown up
Feature:
EMI DISTURBANCE SHIELDING
Available on:
Q20 e Q40
Effect:
When this feature is turned on, your detector will have a better EMI disturbance shielding, enhancing its stability. By turning it off, it will gain some sensitivity but could be a little bit erratic.
Activation Sequence:
By pressing (at the same time) the “PINPOINTER” and “GROUND BALANCE” keys, you will turn ON or OFF this feature. You will read the letters “Eo” when the EMI Shield is activated and “Ed” when it is deactivated.
Feature:
FREQUENCY OFFSET
Available on:
Q20 (Already documented on Q40 user’s manual)
Effect:
In case of EMI disturbances due to nearby detectors, pinpointers, powerlines etc, you could (together with the above mentioned Secret feature) slightly modify the detector operating frequency in order to keep it quieter and stable,
Activation Sequence:
By pressing the “GROUND BALANCE” key and the “Volume +” or “Volume -“ keys, a F1 to F8 value will be shown on screen. These are related to 8 little frequency offset. Choose the one that will make the detector to stay quieter.
will the same changes work on the x10?
